National Council on Intellectual Disability

The overall aim of the National Council is to make available to people with an intellectual disability, the same life opportunities as are available to other Australians. The Council endeavours to assist support individuals to achieve their optimum growth and maturity and to safeguard the rights of people with intellectual disabilities. It seeks to achieve these aims by direct action and by action through member organisations. A primary role of the National Council is to collect and disseminate information to individual organisations, families and others concerned for people with intellectual disabilities. The second primary role is to promote an awareness of the needs and abilities of people with intellectual disabilities and to promote a positive attitude towards them within the general public and the government. The third primary role is that of a watchdog for people with intellectual disabilities, their families and those who seek to assist. The Council also sells publications produced by the Australian Institute on Intellectual Disabilities, please enquire for details.
