Community Activities

Community events are excellent ways to build awareness of the International Day of People with DisAbility in the wider community. They can also be lots of fun and very rewarding.

A day in the park/at the beach

  • Bands
  • Kids entertainment (clowns, face painting, jumping castle, mobile petting zoo etc)
  • Sausage Sizzles
  • BYO Picnics
  • Art competitions/displays/exhibitions

Sporting Activities

  • Blind Cricket
  • Soccer
  • Sitting Volleyball
  • Wheelchair races

Some other ideas

  • Create a living sculpture
  • Invite people (maybe celebrities) with disabilities to give talks, or to take part in activities
  • Access Expo - create workshops designed to raise awareness
  • Treasure Hunt/Relay (you might like to do this in a wheelchair)
  • Sail Boat Race (there has been a very successful race between members of the media and local government officials)
  • Harley Davidson Rides
  • Disco
  • Fashion Parade (you might consider featuring designs by people with disabilities, or using models with disabilities)
